This month, BBC Four is giving us a second chance to see Simon Russell Beale’s documentary on the evolution of the symphony, which was first shown in 2011.

The second episode looks at the phenomenal impact that the late symphonies of Beethoven had on music and composers for decades afterwards.

The programme also looks at two of the great symphonies of Schubert, both discovered after his tragic death. Also featured are the works of French composers Berlioz and Liszt

The programme features performances from the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the Hallé conducted by Sir Mark Elder.
