Penny Gore presents Verdi’s Il Corsaro performed by José Carreras (tenor), Jessye Norman, Montserrat Caballé (sopranos) and Gian-Piero Mastromei (baritone). This all-star cast joins The Ambrosian Singers and the New Philharmonia Orchestra for an acclaimed recording of this rarely performed work.

Fist performed in 1848, the opera is based on Byron’s poem The Corsaire.

Set between the Turkish city of Corone and a Greek Island in the Aegean, the plot begins with the chief corsair, Corrado, in exile. Upon hearing rumours of military threat from the Turkish Pasha Seid, he leaves with his men for Corone, breaking the heart of his lover Medora. Corrado and his men are initially victorious, but he finds himself in prison.

When he eventually escapes, he returns to the island to find that Medora has been driven mad by grief and what insues is a tragic end for them both.
