Rumon Gamba conducts the Ulster Orchestra in music by Britten, Haydn and Moeran.

The concert opens with Britten’s Suite on English Folk Tunes, which he composed for the Aldeburgh Festival a year before his death. Next, Radio 3 New Generation Artist Jennifer Johnston (mezzo-soprano) joins the orchestra for Haydn’s Arianna a Naxos, a solo cantata that portrays a lover’s betrayal.

After the interval, Johnston returns for Britten’s Phaedra, another cantata, which explores themes of unfulfilled love and a tragic fate.

The concert ends with Moeran’s Sinfonietta, which takes the programme back to the folk influences seen in the opening Britten.
