In June this year (17th – 21st) the Birmingham Conservatoire will host a celebration of the music of two of England’s most contrasting and individual composers: John Ireland and Frederick Delius.
‘Delius and Ireland: A Celebration’ is a five-day Festival, one of the biggest the Conservatoire has ever hosted, involving over 60 individuals from the senior and junior Conservatoire, students and Faculty (including those famously associated with this repertoire), as well as orchestras, choirs and guest artists.
Fifteen concert programmes will showcase songs, piano pieces, chamber and orchestral works - including performances of the complete solo piano works by John Ireland, the Delius Double and Ireland Piano Concerto – and culminate in a performance of Delius's masterpiece, Seadrift, with the Conservatoire Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Lionel Friend in Birmingham Town Hall on 21st June. Today's programme also includes the world première of an early work by Benjamin Britten entitled Chaos and Cosmos, which the Conservatoire’s students have been preparing and recording as part of the Britten Thematic Catalogue.
Yu-Fen Lin graduated from Birmingham Conservatoire’s MMus course with Distinction in 2012. She has since been studying on our flagship Professional Performance programme which supports outstanding performers at the start of their careers. This evening’s performance marks the culmination of her postgraduate studies at the Conservatoire.

Wed, 2013-06-26 19:00George Lloyd's A Litany | EC4 Music Orchestra and ChoirClaire Seaton, EC4 Music Choir, EC4 Music Orchestra, Nili Newman, Rivka Gottlieb, Sam Evans, Tim CrosleySt Bride's Church, Fleet Street London EC4 8AUUnited Kingdom
George Lloyd's setting takes words from John Donne's 28-verse poem A Litany. He sets just twelve verses for his four movements, in which he also asks for soprano and baritone soloists. EC4 Music first performed this large scale choral work in 1996, and will give the piece another airing to mark Lloyd's Centenary year.
Lloyd wrote in the score: "In spite of John Donne's catalogue of human frailties and disasters there are verses in the poem that give some hope, and these are the verses I have used to end the work". Commissioned by the Guildford Choral Society, it was premiered by them with the Philharmonia Orchestra and the 83-year old composer conducting. The composer's ending is written in his most exciting orchestrally brilliant vein.
A major new choral work - intensely committed singing, generous tunes….the choral writing grows increasingly ecstatic. A paean of confidence. (The Daily Telegraph)
'A Litany' celebrates the English choral tradition as confidently as Parry, Elgar and Vaughan Williams. (The Financial Times)
