Handel's Saul is one of his most richly orchestrated and dramatic oratorios, dealing with emotions of joy, festivity, love, suspicion, reconciliation, jealousy, fear, anger, hate, tragic self-recognition, bereavement and determination. Written for choir, soloists and orchestra including trumpets, trombones and 'bells', this is the story of the heroic Saul's descent into madness and contains glorious baroque vocal, choral and orchestral music of the highest order of composition.

Sat, 2013-05-18 19:30Mahler's Symphony No 2 (Resurrection), transcribed for Organ - PremiereDavid Briggs, Gloucester Choral Society, Janet Shell, Nicola-Jane Kemp, Paul Leddington Wright, Saint Michael's SingersCoventry Cathedral Coventry CV1 5ABUnited Kingdom
Saint Michael’s Singers of Coventry Cathedral continue their 50th anniversary concert season with an organ and choral spectacular on Saturday, 18th May at 7.30pm in Coventry Cathedral. The concert is conducted by Saint Michael’s Singers’ musical director Paul Leddington Wright. Internationally renowned organist David Briggs, former Organist and now Organist Emeritus at Gloucester Cathedral, returns as soloist to Coventry, celebrating a long association with both Coventry and Gloucester Cathedrals. His new transcription for organ of Mahler’s mighty second symphony forms the centerpiece of an unforgettable evening.
Coventry Cathedral’s world-famous Harrison and Harrison organ is the instrument specially chosen by David Briggs for this performance. He first played his transcription on 12th April this year in New York at the Cathedral of St John the Divine and will again be soloist in the European premiere in Coventry on Saturday, 18th May.
The concert opens with three unaccompanied motets by Anton Bruckner, a composer of equal stature to that of Mahler. To mark the connection with Gloucester Cathedral, Saint Michael’s Singers are joined by Gloucester Choral Society to sing these richly harmonic works. They are followed by Mahler’s second symphony, the “Resurrection”, in the new transcription for organ by David Briggs as its European Premiere.

A concert of cheeky tunes, memorable melodies and songs with or without words. Aspidistra, praised for its lively and authentic interpretation of Palm Court Music, was regularly played by Brian Kay on BBC Radio 3. This music, popular by name but classical by nature, is a perfect introduction to classical music for youngsters and a refreshing change for veterans.

We welcome two distinguished members of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra: Peter Whelan, who will direct a Baroque style programme, and Rosie Staniforth who returns to play the Bach Oboe Concerto (replacing the originally programmed Mozart K314 because it aligns better with the character of the rest of the programme). Peter Whelan's musicianship is inspirational and the orchestra is particularly privileged to be performing with him in the final concert of the season.

Sat, 2013-05-25 19:45Mostly Mozart with St George's Chamber OrchestraDominic Moore, Michael Atkinson, St George's Chamber OrchestraSt George's Parish Church Beckenham BR3 1AXUnited Kingdom
As well as Mozart's much loved symphony in A, this programme includes a wonderful, seldom heard Mozart overture and a delightful movement from a symphony by his father, Leopold. Our principal cellist, Michael Atkinson, who is also a member of the BBC Symphony Orchestra will play the concerto in C by Haydn and we will also play a short work by Beckenham resident and RCM professor Jonathan Pitkin.
St. George’s Chamber Orchestra was founded in 2004 as the professional orchestra for the South East to give local music lovers the opportunity to hear orchestral concerts of the highest standard on their doorstep.
The orchestra is drawn from an extraordinarily talented, experienced and versatile pool of musicians, a large number of whom are past winners of prestigious awards and musical competitions in the UK and elsewhere. Many either are or have been members of the leading London orchestras and a significant number are principals in those orchestras. Many others are members of Britain’s best known chamber ensembles.
We are proud to be resident at St. George’s Church, Beckenham, which has a long, strong and respected musical heritage, and boasts one of the finest church choirs in the UK. With its spaciousness, good acoustics, and warm friendly atmosphere it is an ideal venue for a chamber orchestra.
A few comments from our audience:
