Wed, 2013-06-26 19:30City of London Festival: Barry Douglas (piano)Barry DouglasStationers' Hall London EC4M 7DDUnited Kingdom
Northern Irish pianist Barry Douglas offers a programme featuring two of the towering masterworks for piano. Beginning in gentler musical territory, connecting with the Festival’s ongoing environmental themes, Janácek’s nostalgic On an Overgrown Path focuses on the countryside of the composer's homeland and represents the passage of time, the deaths of his two children and his artistic isolation. As a contrast Brahms’s early Sonata follows a large-scale five movement structure which announced his arrival as a creative giant of the Romantic era. Schubert’s Sonata in B flat, his last before his death, explores immensity of a different kind – vast and lyrical, this work traverses a range of moods from desolation to hope and ends with whimsical optimism.

Thu, 2013-06-27 19:30City of London Festival: Britten SinfoniaBritten Sinfonia, Huw Watkins, Jacqueline Shave, Nicholas DanielMansion House London EC4United Kingdom
Britten Sinfonia is joined by both award-winning oboeist Nicholas Daniel and pianist Huw Watkins to present a programme of works that reflect upon the idea of 'conflict and resolution', signified by the twin gods of Greek mythology, Apollo and Dionysus. Order, harmony and serenity are presented in the opening of Stravinsky's ballet score where the beauty of the young Apollo is portrayed by the string orchestra. Britten's dramatic Young Apollo for piano and strings signifies the composer's return to tonality and a fresh approach to his composition.
The world première of David Matthews' orchestral version of his work The Flaying of Marsyas is inspired by Titain's painting where Apollo can be seen playing an early form of violin and Marsyas, who challenged Apollo to a musical contest and whose punishment for being defeated was to be flayed, played the aulos, a kind of oboe. The newer works are interspersed with the concertos of Vivalid's much-loved The Four Seasons reconnecting with the Festival's environmental themes.

The Fidelo Trio present a programme of virtuosic works from composers Ravel, Frank Lyons and Nigel Osborne. The River Still Sings is a multimedia work set to a new text by Seamus Deane with visuals by Paul Moore. Commissioned as part of Derry~Londonderry 2013 and also marking the 400-year relationship between Derry and the City of London, this new work reflects the importance of the rivers to both cities. The Piano Tuner Trio – based on the first novel by American author Daniel Mason – follows a piano tuner to the remote jungles of northeast Burma in 1886 to repair a rare piano. Ravel's wonderful Piano Trio, was composed on the edge of the outbreak of World War I, the composer writing to Stravinsky "The idea that I should be leaving at once [to join the war effort] made me get through five months' work in five weeks! My Trio is finished."
