Live and Local presents Miloš Karadaglic (guitar)
London Philharmonic Orchestra, Miloš Karadaglić, Vladimir Jurowski
De Montfort Hall Leicester LE1 7RU
    United Kingdom

Inspired by the picturesque gardens of the Palace of Aranjuez outside Madrid, Joaquín Rodrigo wrote a colourful, strong yet tranquil evocation of elegance and beauty for guitar and orchestra whose contented, serene beauty is legendary: his Concierto de Aranjuez. Joining London Philharmonic Orchestra to perform this masterpiece is Classic BRIT Award-winning guitarist Miloš Karadaglic.

Following is Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony, which so encapsulates his ultra-expressive, heart-on-sleeve creative outlook. A distraught Tchaikovsky, his disastrous private life torturing him in life and forcing him into death, filled this symphony with honesty and passion - and he committed suicide nine days after its first performance.

LPO Principal Conductor and Artistic Director Vladimir Jurowski conducts the Orchestra in this varied concert, also including Mozart's joyous Symphony No 32.

Symphony No 32 in G major
    Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
    Concierto de Aranjuez
    Joaquin Rodrigo (1901-1999)

    Pyotr Tchaikovsky (1840-1893)
    £15 Available from 0116 233 3111 Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm.

SJE International Piano Series 2014 - Viv McLean
    Viv McLean
Church of St John the Evangelist Oxford OX4 1EH
    United Kingdom

Winner of the First Prize at the 2002 Maria Canals International Piano Competition in Barcelona, Viv McLean has performed at all the major venues in the UK as well as throughout Europe, Japan, Australia and the USA. Recent concerto highlights include Mozart K. 467 with the English Chamber Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall, Grieg with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Barbican and a tour of the USA with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performing Gershwin. Other performances include Rachmaninov’s 3rd Concerto with the RPO in Cambridge, Gershwin and Bernstein with the Hallé at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester and Beethoven's 5th Concerto with the Philharmonia at the Royal Festival Hall.

Viv also plays with leading chamber music groups and has collaborated with musicians such as Natalie Clein, Marianne Thorsen, Lawrence Power, Eijin Nimura, Phillip Dukes, Kate Gould, Guy Johnston, David Le Page, Carl Davis and Marvin Hamlisch. He has recorded regularly for BBC Radio 3 since making his recital debut through the BBC Radio 3 Young Artists Forum scheme and has also recorded recitals for Classic FM, WDR Radio in Germany, Radio France, ABC Radio in Australia, NRK Radio in Norway and for the Sky Arts television channel.

Viv studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Hamish Milne where he held the Hodgson Fellowship and was made an Associate of the Royal Academy in 2005. Whilst studying at the Academy, he was the piano winner at the Royal Overseas-League Music Competition and was selected as one of three winners of the National Federation of Music Societies' Young Artists Competition, leading to various recitals and concerto appearances throughout Great Britain.

Viv McLean revealed extraordinary originality, superb simplicity, and fingers of steel hidden behind muscles of velvet. He is an otherworldly young man - he plays with the genius one finds in those who know how to forget themselves, naturally placing themselves at the right point to meet the music, this mystery of the moment. Le Monde, Paris.

The fluent technique and brilliance of the interpreter were impressive, he played with insight and the greatest sensitivity. General Anzeiger, Bonn.

Bart Spanhove, Flanders Recorder Quartet, Joris Van Goethem, Paul Van Loey, Tom Beets
Woking United Reformed Church Woking GU22 7HA
    United Kingdom

    Banchetto Musicale

In 1733, Telemann composed his famous collection, 'Musique de Table'. A manuscript dating from 1670, belonging to the archbishop of Olomouc was given the title 'Sonata pro Tabula'. Henry VIII took daily pleasure in the sound of recorders during his meals and in the company of dainty ladies and influential politicians. Schein collected his dance music into a 'Banchetto Musicale'. The ideaof the musical banquet was popular throughout the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Christoforo di Messisbugo, a renowned chef at the court of the countess of Ferrara in Italy around 1550, compiled a splendid cookbook with 315 different recipes accompanied by careful instructions on how, where and when music, dance and theatre should be performed during the various dishes.

With this program, 'Banchetto Musicale', the Flanders Recorder Quartet hope to tickle your palate with a musical banquet in which they get out the best silver service, recorders of the highest quality in all shapes and sizes, and use them in 1001 different ways. To live up to the title, they’re even performing on beer and wine bottles from their own cellars!

The menu, 'Symphonie des 7 Dégustations', is made up of French hors d’oeuvres, Italian antipasti, a queenly serving of the daily special, and to finish, a scrumptious array of desserts. You’ll be offered something of everything: old and new dishes from the north, south, east and west. Crack open a bottle of bubbly, sit back, and enjoy the house specialties. Cheers!

The Ambassadors of the Recorder …

Since its foundation in 1987, the Flanders Recorder Quartet has evolved into one of the world’s top ensembles. Their success in 1990 at the prestigious Musica Antiqua Competition in Bruges (B), which is sponsored by the Flanders Festival, was the start of an extensive concert career. After more than 1800 concerts in 42 countries on five continents, including some in world-famous concert halls in Tokyo, New York and Salzburg, the ensemble has attained a prominent position in the world of Early Music. The ensemble also makes regular guest appearances at leading music festivals such as those in Helsinki, Paris, Geneva, Boston, Vancouver, Singapore, Taipei and Mexico City. Numerous prizewinning recordings have been made for record companies such as Harmonia Mundi, Archiv/Deutsche Grammophon, Ricercar, and OPUS III. In 2003 the quartet entered a long and intensive collaboration with the German label AEOLUS
