Mon, 2013-06-03 19:30Steinberg Duo - The Russian ViolinLouisa Stonehill, Nicholas Burns, Steinberg Duo1901 Arts Club London SE1 8UEUnited Kingdom
The Steinberg Duo are rapidly establishing themselves as one of the few performers to present violin and piano repertoire as an equal partnership with recent performances in Canada, Spain and Germany and throughout the UK. "... spine-tingling music... afterwards it was difficult to imagine the works being interpreted in any other way..." RemoteGoat
Formed in 2007, the duo are passionate about presenting the wonderful violin and piano repertoire as an equal partnership, and having married in 2008, they are perhaps unusually well-placed to do so! Over the last three seasons they have established a successful recital series in 1901 Arts Club. In January 2012 the duo spent three weeks in residence at the Banff Centre. Committed to supporting high quality contemporary music, the duo enjoy a particularly close association with composer Philip Sawyers, from whom they commissioned a second violin sonata which premiered in June 2012 at 1901 Arts Club. They will also be making their first commercial recording with the Orchestra of the Swan in early 2013, performing Sawyers Concertante for Piano, Violin and Strings.
The Club's exclusive bar and lounge are open for the enjoyment of ticketholders half an hour before the performance. The performers also invite you to join them there after the performance.

Wed, 2013-05-29 19:30Vienna's Finest | Royal Philharmonic OrchestraArianna Zukerman, Pinchas Zukerman, Royal Philharmonic OrchestraRoyal Festival Hall London SE1 8XXUnited Kingdom
Elegant and moving music from two of the finest composers ever to call Vienna their home. Mozart's Third Violin Concerto, written when he was only nineteen, is full of youthful charm, with a slow movement of tender romance. The final rondo features a lively dance tune associated with Strasbourg, from which the Concerto gets its nickname. Mahler's Fourth Symphony, which opens with jingling sleigh-bells, is one of his most delicate. Yet there is all the contrast you'd expect from Mahler: a quirky scherzo and a slow movement of yearning beauty, ending with the finale's soprano solo unfolding a child's vision of Heaven.

- Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)

Summer music from the world’s leading classical saxophonist. John Harle is the most recorded saxophonist in the world, working with the greatest of musicians, his activities have taken him from the Last Night of the BBC Proms and the podium of the LSO to production on a number of chart-topping albums. John is performing the bewitching Saxophone Concerto by Glazunov, who was enthralled by the saxophone and called it a ‘new timbre’ in classical music. Also, Chick Corea’s Children’s Songs, a beautiful collection of short musical stories that communicate with an uncomplicated directness, but are structurally and harmonically sophisticated. Transcribed for saxophone and string orchestra by John Harle.
Donizetti and Schubert, both born in 1797, offer the charm, lyricism and vivacity of 18th century music. Schubert’s Symphony No. 5 is often said to resemble Mozart, reflected particularly in the lighter instrumentation. Stravinsky’s Pulcinella led him onto neo-classicism, inspired by 18th century music, which established his international reputation.

'In this anniversary year of Carlo Gesualdo’s death, it is a pleasure to perform again his astonishing Responsories for Holy Saturday. When our recording of this set first came out in the late ’80s the Gramophone critic wrote: ‘Is this great music or merely weird?’ After many more performances I can say quite clearly that it is both. Gesualdo was unique; and whatever one thinks of his behaviour in life, I am convinced he knew exactly what he was doing with his music. To complement Gesualdo’s chromatic style we have put together a second half of music which has similar features – experimental, chromatic, ahead of its time – ending with that much-loved arch-revolutionary, Monteverdi.' Brahms’s titanic concerto took a long time to find the final form that satisfied the composer. Stormy outer movements are separated by a slow movement of stillness and great beauty.
The Eroica symphony expanded both symphonic form and musical language in one astounding blow. The emotional heart of the piece is the famous funeral march, and it ends with a set of variations on a simple tune that overflows with musical imagination.
