    Song in the City is an inventive series of concerts that brings talented young singers and pianists to the heart of the Square Mile. Our concerts profile both well-known and lesser-performed repertoire in the inspiring surroundings of the Hall at St Botolph without Bishopsgate.

    This Summer, we explore the various ways in which women are represented in Song, be they a royal queen, a mother, a wife, or an unsung heroine such as Nadia Boulanger, conductor, composer and teacher of many of the 20th century’s greatest composers.

    An eclectic evening of music spanning almost 300 years. Britten’s rarely-heard homage to the Roman poet Ovid is accompanied by readings from texts by Ted Hughes, by actress Diana Quick. Earlier, Handel’s rarely heard oboe concerto prefigures the charming beauty of Knussen’s ‘Cantata’ of 1981.

    A new semi-staged production with dance of Purcell's great opera of love and abandonment, set in the magnificent space of the recently restored St Stephen's Church, Hampstead.

    Peter Fender directs his own production in two performances on Saturday 22nd June and Sunday 23rd June, both at 7.30pm

    Rebecca Hodgetts and Steve Hawksley take the title roles and Genesis Dance Group perform dances originally incorporated but which are usually omitted, to music by Purcell, Peter Fender and improvisions (as would have occured at the time).

    Classical singers from across the globe have been selected to compete in the 30th anniversary BBC Cardiff Singer of the World. In the last of the four concerts showcasing the finest singing talent from across the world, the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera, conducted by Graeme Jenkins, will accompany 5 of the singers performing in front of an international jury, including Dame Kiri Te Kanawa - patron of the competition.

    If Love’s a Sweet Passion | Ars Eloquentiae

    Ars Eloquentiae (the art of eloquence) is an established period-instrument ensemble which has recently taken up residency in the historic setting of St Anne’s Church, Kew Green in London. The ensemble’s members are drawn from the highest ranks of London’s young professional musicians, and regularly perform with many of the world’s most highly renowned early music ensembles, including the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Acadamy of Ancient Music, the English Baroque Soloists, The Sixteen Choir and Orchestra, Tenebrae and The New London Consort.

    Ars Eloquentiae’s performances are characterised by their vibrancy and youthful exuberance and this recital, a powerful exploration of the joys and pains of love, promises to be thoroughly enriching musical experience.

    Following the morning’s lecture - The Britten Centenary Lecture Britten and the Voice, David Bednall (piano) is joined by acclaimed tenor Iain MacLeod-Jones for a recital of Britten song. The duo have achieved notable success for their interpretation of this music, and the programme, featuring some lesser known masterpieces alongside the ever popular folksongs, is certain to enthuse and delight English song lovers.

    Bristol Baroque Soloists bring the sunlight of the Mediterranean to Clifton Cathedral with this wonderful violin and harpsichord lunchtime programme centred around Corelli's La Folia.

    Originating on the Iberian Peninsular in the late Middle Ages, La Folia is a framework for improvisation - much like the Blues in jazz.

    Corelli’s famous version of the melody and chord progressions was written in 1700, and its popularity has endured across Europe and beyond ever since. Music by Handel and Biber complete this beguiling programme.
