Sun, 2013-05-26 14:15English Music Festival: Parry and Stanford choral works | The Elysian SingersSam Laughton, The Elysian Singers of LondonRadley College Chapel Radley, Abingdon OX14 2HRUnited Kingdom
The Seventh English Music Festival will take place in and around Dorchester-on-Thames, Oxfordshire over the weekend of 24th – 27th May 2013. Once again, the Festival showcases works which were box office hits during their day, but which have since fallen into unaccountable neglect.
Highlights of this year’s English Music Festival include world première performances of important works by Ralph Vaughan Williams and Henry Walford Davies; a rare opportunity to hear Arthur Sullivan’s cantata The Golden Legend, masterpieces by Elgar, Moeran and Bax, and a ‘last night’ celebration concert boasting no fewer than eight new commissions.
The English Music Festival has always been keen to showcase our country’s rich choral heritage and this year the Elysian Singers will perform a programme of choral works by Parry and Stanford in the beautiful Chapel at Radley College, near Abingdon on the afternoon of Sunday 26th May. The music will be set in context with readings, including extracts from letters by the composers.
For the evening concert back in Dorchester Abbey, Hilary Davan Wetton will conduct his City of London Choir in John Gardner’s Stabat Mater, as well as works by Britten, Dyson and Finzi, ending with Vaughan Williams’s ever-popular Five Mystical Songs.
A convenient mini-bus transfer is available to/from Didcot station, Dorchester-on-Thames and other venues; see website time-table for details.
Booking opens on 15th March; more details on the English Music Festival website.

One of the outstanding pianists of the young generation, Tomasz Lis is in great demand as a soloist and chamber musician.
"...Equally impressive was the confident Tomasz Lis, admirable in support and characterful on his own terms, finding more light and shade in the piano part...." Classical Source
"...the piano part played with great artistry by Mr Lis." Opera-Britannia
Tomasz has performed in major concert halls in the UK and abroad including Wigmore Hall, Barbican Centre, St. John's Smith Square, LSO St. Luke’s, The Warehouse and The Chopin Society. He has appeared with great success at the Cheltenham Music Festival, Mostly Mozart Festival, Chelsea Schubert Festival and London Festival of American Music. He has also received rave reviews for his performances in Poland most notably with the Polish Radio Chamber Orchestra “Amadeus” conducted by Agnieszka Duczmal and Poznan Philharmonic Orchestra with Grzegorz Nowak.
Recent seasons have seen his highly acclaimed Wigmore Hall debut with outstanding baritone Jonathan Sells as a result of winning the Guildhall Wigmore Recital Prize. He recently embarked on two different but equally fascinating recording projects. The American Album presents three generations of American composers: Aaron Copland, John Harbison and Andre Previn. In 2008 Tomasz gave a European premiere of the Milosz Songs by John Harbison with rising-star soprano Nadine Mortimer-Smith at the Second London Festival of American Music. The sessions took place at the Henry Wood Hall and the album has been recorded and produced by Tony Faulkner. The second recording project began in January 2012 and includes music by Debussy, Chausson, Messiaen and Poulenc with soprano Jessica Leschnikoff and the Sacconi Quartet. Both albums are due to be released soon.
After the concert ticketholders are invited to join the Tomasz in the Club's exclusive bar.

The Royal Academy of Music presents London Lithuanaians Trio.
Formed in 2012, The London Lithuanian Trio has already established itself as a promising chamber music ensemble. Antanas Makstutis, clarinet, Ugne Tiskute, viola and Morta Grigaliunaite piano, are students of Mark van de Wiel, Martin Outram and Hamish Milne at the Royal Academy of Music. All three members receive full scholarships from the Academy and are individual prize-winners and solo performers in addition to this chamber music activity.
The distinctive sound of clarinet viola and piano encourages the group to collaborate with young composers from leading music colleges in London as well as perform the standard repertoire. Their most recent performances include recitals at the Norfolk and Norwich Festival 2013 and David Josefowitz Recital Hall at the Royal Academy of Music. Although this trio is a new chamber music group, they are vibrant and enthusiastic musicians who are passionate about exploring new possibilities for this unusual combination of instruments."A remarkable lunchtime concert by three Lithuanian musicians" Peter Grahame Woolf
