Ribble Valley International Piano Festival 2014 - Launch Concert
    Martin Roscoe
Westholme Theatre, Westholme School Blackburn BB2 6QU
    United Kingdom

Come and hear the Artistic Director of Ribble Valley International Piano Week, Martin Roscoe, for an evening of popular fantasies by the great composers.

With a wide range of moods and characters. Mozart’s short Fantasy in D minor is one of his most popular piano pieces, by turns wistful, dramatic and light-hearted.

Schumann’s Kreisleriana, '8 Fantasias' has similar contrasts – the music is either frenetic and passionate or contemplative and serene. Beethoven’s Sonata quasi una fantasia has four contrasting movements played continuously, and Brahms’s Op 116 Fantasies, written towards the end of his life are intimate and economical.

Finally Chopin’s F minor fantasy is a fifteen minute story of turbulence contrasted with moments of complete calm.

Fantasia No 3 in D minor
    Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
    Kreisleriana
    Robert Schumann (1810-1856)
Sonata for Piano No 13 in E flat, 'quasi una fantasia'
    Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)

Haydn's The Creation | Cambridge Philharmonic
Céline Forrest, Lancelot Nomura, Nicholas Scott, The Cambridge Philharmonic Chorus, The Cambridge Philharmonic Orchestra, Timothy Redmond
West Road Concert Hall Cambridge CB3 9DP
    United Kingdom

Whilst visiting England between 1791 and1795, Haydn was completely overwhelmed by his first experiences of hearing Handel’s oratorios. His response to was to embark on a choral work of his own, one that took him longer to compose than anything else he wrote: “I spent much time over it because I expect it to last for a long time,” he explained.

Taking texts selected from the book of Psalms and Milton’s Paradise Lost, in a version that had originally been intended for Handel, Haydn had the English words translated into German and set both languages simultaneously. Hundreds of people gathered in the street to hear the first private performance in Vienna in 1798 and the work’s public premiere was sold out far in advance.

The Creation is a true work of the Enlightenment in which science and religion sit happily side by side and Haydn’s inspired music depicts both the majesty of the universe and the mystery of the Divine - a work that will give the Cambridge Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus the perfect chance to shine.

“The big pleasure of the evening rests with the conductor, Timothy Redmond.” The Times
