NYOS 35th Anniversary Gala Concert - The Year of the Trumpet
Håkan Hardenberger, Michael Francis, The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland
    Usher Hall Edinburgh EH1 2EA
    United Kingdom

In 2014, The National Youth Orchestras of Scotland celebrates 35 years of remarkable music making. To mark the occasion NYOS will host a 35th Anniversary Gala Concert this summer at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall, where the flagship symphony orchestra will be joined by possibly the best trumpet player alive today, none other than Håkan Hardenberger.

In 2003, NYOS commissioned leading Scottish composer Sally Beamish to compose a trumpet concerto for the man dubbed ‘the best trumpet player in the galaxy’ (The Times), Håkan Hardenberger, to perform at the BBC Proms. The resulting work, with its myriad of percussion and trumpet pyrotechnics, was so well received that NYOS and Hardenberger are again showcasing it in 2014. The programme, conducted by the brilliant young Englishman Michael Francis, making his Scottish debut, will also feature Richard Strauss’s mammoth ‘Alpine Symphony’ requiring no fewer than 17 horn players, wind and thunder machines, organ and even a heckelphone!

The Very Distant Days | London Concord Singers
    London Concord Singers, Malcolm Cottle
Sint Janskerk Maastricht Maastricht 6211 LE Maastric
    United Kingdom

Following their world premiere performance in London, London Concord Singers present the Dutch premiere of The Very Distant Days by the contemporary British composer Judith Bingham. The Very Distant Days, a London Concord Singers commission, sets a text which intriguingly combines words by Charles Dickens and Lewis Carroll. Bingham uses extracts from Dombey and Son and Alice in Wonderland to create a wonderfully meditative piece on ageing and growing old. London Concord Singers will be performing this alongside Zoltán Kodály's own take on the same subject, Oregek.

Also in the programme is Vaughan Williams Five English Folksongs, one of the gems of the 20th century choral repertoire, plus a selection of sacred music spanning 600 years from the Spanish baroque composer Tomas Luis da Victoria to another contemporary British composer, Cecilia McDowall.
