Sat, 2013-06-22 19:30Durham Singers and Renaissance: Blessed CeciliaBen Rowarth, Durham Singers, Julian Wright, Renaissance Chamber Choir (Durham)Elvet Methodist Church Durham City DH1 3HLUnited Kingdom
Durham Singers and Renaissance present a concert of solo and a cappella works from the 17th to the 21st centuries, celebrating Benjamin Britten’s great love for the music of Henry Purcell, and Britten’s influence on exciting contemporary composers such as Julian Anderson. The programme includes Britten's magnificent Hymn to St Cecilia, which calls on the patron saint of music to “come down and startle composing mortals with immortal fire”.
The Durham Singers have been inspired by Britten’s enthusiastic and generous support for young musicians, and so this concert showcases the talents of some of Durham’s up-and-coming solo singers and of the 21-year old composer and conductor Ben Rowarth. Ben will conduct part of the concert, and solo items will be performed by members of his acclaimed chamber choir 'Renaissance', including Britten’s exquisite Canticle I sung by tenor Hugo Hymas. The programme also includes Ben Rowarth's Where is thy God, winner of the 2012 NCEM Composers Award. (Read more about the award, and listen to Ben's piece here: http://www.ncem.co.uk/composersaward2012)
