Cellists Luka Šulić and Stjepan Hauser dazzle their audience at Shepherds Bush Empire
In their February show, the two skilled young Croatian cellists Luka Šulić and Stjepan Hauser – AKA 2CELLOS – mesmerised and astonished the whole Shepherd’s Bush Empire audience in a way that was unlike anything I’ve experienced before.
They opened the concert by going back to their roots: they performed two classical pieces, taking it in turns to play solo passages and then together before moving on to their own music.
The order and choice of songs was well elaborated, easing the audience from classical music, to pop and rock and even heavy metal. It is exceptional how 2CELLOS blend different genres together and appeal to an audience that is unusually diverse.
Even though the age range encompassed about 50 years, everyone was equally swept away by the fun these two young men were having throughout the whole evening.
Of particular note was the simplicity of the show: these two remarkable musicians needed nothing more than their music and their virtuosity to captivate the audience and leave hundreds of people breathless. Even though I had seen their videos on YouTube before the concert, I couldn't help but be astonished by their dexterity. One simply has to see them live to believe what they are capable of with their instruments.
They succeeded in making this an unforgettable evening by playing my favourite arrangements with contagious joy and enthusiasm. This was a very special night which greatly exceeded my expectations and reaffirmed my belief that their live shows are truly a must-see event.
