BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers’ Competition winners announced

Five young composers win a BBC Proms performance and a BBC Radio 3 broadcast

The five winners of the annual BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers’ Competition 2013 have been announced, along with six highly commended entrants.

Louie Finley McIver and Lucinda Rimmer were the winners of the Junior Category and Thomas Gibbs, Grace Evangeline Mason and Thomas Brown won the Senior Category.

The winning and commended 12-18 year olds the chance to have their works performed by the Aurora Orchestra at the Young Composers’ Concert at the Royal College of Music on Wednesday 7 August, conducted by Nicholas Collon. Their pieces will be recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on Friday 9 August.

The winning entrants will also receive a BBC commission.

Chaired by Fraser Trainer, the entries were judged by a panel comprising composers and music industry professionals including Andrew Kurowski, Stuart MacRae, Anna Meredith and Martin Suckling who looked for music that was original, unique, and inspiring.

Judge Stuart MacRae said: ‘I found the variety of styles, exciting sounds, and the energy and commitment that had been put into this, really exhilarating.’

As part of the BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers several composition classes for 12-18 year olds will be held throughout the Proms season. For more details go to the BBC Proms Inspire website.

SENIOR CATEGORY (17-18 years): Thomas Gibbs – effet de nuit… Grace Evangeline Mason – Convergence Thomas Brown – Recomposed Baroque
