Walton's powerful First Symphony is the full work on our free CD this August, and you can listen to a clip from it now.

Written between 1931 and ’35, the piece is a wonderful showcase of the composer’s inventive orchestration and was a huge success at its premiere in 1935.

In this live recording from London’s Royal Festival Hall in 1975, Sir Adrian Boult conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

‘Adrian Boult received a hero’s welcome,’ wrote William Mann in The Times of the concert, ‘and gave the symphony a sturdy, athletic reading… that stick technique as immaculate as ever’. Click here to listen to a clip.
