Simon Trpčeski stars as the soloist in Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini on your free cover CD with the August 2010 issue of BBC Music Magazine. He performs with the BBC Philharmonic, conducted by Sir Andrew Davis.
The piece is Rachmaninov's final work for piano and orchestra, penned one summer in a lakeside villa near Lucerne. The concerto reinvigorated the Russian composer's flagging reputation, and ended his struggle to adopt any of the radical musical languages being explored by his contemporaries.
Also on your free CD this month is Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 3, performed by the BBC Philharmonic under Gianandrea Noseda. Although Tchaikovsky thought the symphony lacked 'particularly successful ideas', he acknowledged its 'craftsmanship is a step forward', and the work remains popular today.
