Opera North has announced that Serbian conductor Aleksandar Marković will replace its current music director Richard Farnes, who is due to step down in July 2016.
Marković made his debut with Opera North in 2015 in a production of Janáček's Jenufa, and has since conducted the Orchestra of Opera North in concert. 'When I first worked with Opera North it felt like love at first sight' he says. 'The company reach for the stars every single time they perform… I am very excited by the prospect of working with them more closely.'
The outgoing Farnes has been at the helm of Opera North since 2004, and has seen them through the entire Ring cycle over the last five years. The Ring project, which above all has defined Farnes's tenure as music director, will also conclude it with a tour of six complete performances around the country throughout summer 2016.
Marković's first production as music director will be a revival of David McVicar's production of Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier in September 2016.
