Bach, Dowland, Purcell & Blow

Daniel Taylor is a young Canadian countertenor, whose most recent appearances include that in Les Arts Florissants’s Paris performance of Handel’s penultimate oratorio Theodora. Taylor has made several solo recordings and this appealingly assembled disc contains items from four of them. All but one of the pieces belong to the late Renaissance (Dowland) and Baroque periods. The programme is framed by Bach, whose ‘Erbarme dich’ (St Matthew Passion) and ‘Saget, saget’ (Easter Oratorio) are sung with expressive restraint and pleasing tonal purity.

Purcell’s exalted air ‘Fairest Isle’ (King Arthur) provides a glorious centrepiece in a fine recital. Nicholas Anderson
