Bruckner/Reger

Bruckner’s Catholic upbringing, his years at St Florian monastery, and his training in harmony and counterpoint formed a rock-solid basis for his creative output. His profound, compactly written motets were either occasional works (for instance, the consecration of the Votive Chapel at Linz Cathedral in 1869), or for specific feast days. The 24-voice Netherlands Chamber Choir produces a compact sound and achieves orchestral colour in places. The end of Pange lingua and the call to Jesus in Ave Maria are magical.

Reger’s motets (1914), rather hymnodic but with some imaginative harmony, are also heartfelt works and get sympathetic performances by this excellent choir. Christopher Fifield
