This delightful disc presents all 16 pieces published in the album Les vendredis in 1898 and 1899, as a souvenir of Friday-evening quartet sessions in the mansion of the St Petersburg merchant, publisher and philanthropist Mitrofan Belyayev. There are fluently written movements by Rimsky-Korsakov, the father-figure of the Belyayev circle, Glazunov, and Borodin (the 5/8 time scherzo also found, orchestrated by Glazunov, in his unfinished Third Symphony). But there is equal pleasure to be had from beautifully turned miniatures by minor composers like Blumenfeld, Sokolov and Kopylov. The performances, although rather distantly recorded, perfectly catch the mood of relaxed enjoyment. Anthony Burton
