Boyce: Trio Sonatas

Boyce’s Trio Sonatas almost outstripped Corelli’s in their popularity in England, and they were taken up by amateur and professional musicians both as chamber music for private performances, and also as orchestral works for the theatre and garden concerts. This is the first complete recording of the sonatas, and it’s easy to see why they were so successful. Boyce’s models are clearly Handel and Corelli, but his own fertile imagination and melodic facility combine to make a set of distinctive and varied works.

The Parley of Instruments alternates chamber with orchestral performances, and if occasionally the playing is a little stolid and angular, there is still much to be enjoyed in this fine addition to The English Orpheus series.
