Dohnanyi/Weiner

This is no reissue. Although Shumsky was 76 when this disc was recorded in 1993, the fingers have lost none of their agility and the musical flow is magical. But it is a collector’s item. If Dohnányi’s C sharp minor Sonata sounds like late Brahms, Leo Weiner’s two sonatas (1911 and 1918) show why the contemporaneous innovations of Stravinsky and Bartók were so bewildering. But Shumsky and Seymour Lipkin make persuasive advocates. Annette Morreau
