Gubaidulina: Seven Words; Silenzio; In croce

In croce (1979), a piece in the form of a sonic cross, was written for cello and organ, but later adapted for the accordion-like bayan. Here one misses the depth and resonance an organ brings, as Koch’s compelling version with Maya Beiser showed. Kliegel’s tone is too often woolly and her performance fails to rise to the extreme chromatic tension of the music. Silenzio and Seven Words both meditate on the gestures of vibrated, sul ponticello and sul tasto tones on strings, and the sounds of the bayan, to dramatic effect. Helen Wallace
