Rubbra/Tate/Wishart

A delightful programme of English string quartets composed in the Fifties. All are accessible and consistently interesting to the ear. Rubbra’s passionate religious beliefs are strongly reflected in his lovely prayer-like Cavatina. Tate’s Quartet, in contrast, is most successful when it is exuberant and full of fun. Wishart’s work contrasts Classical elegance with emotional intensity. The English String Quartet responds superbly to the expressive and technical demands. Ian Lace
