Strauss: Piano Trio No. 1 in A; Piano Trio No. 2 in D

The trios are slight, charming works dating from Strauss’s early teens. But heavy weather is made of them, with tempi dragging, especially in the finales, both of which should be Allegro vivace, but aren’t. The quartets are more assured, both as compositions and performances. Martin Cotton
