Suk: Works for String Quartet

Almost everything Josef Suk wrote for string quartet is here, including the delightful, Dvorákian Quartet No. 1 of 1896. But it’s No. 2 of 1911 that is the real find: an (almost) half-hour movement that breaks open a sonata form structure just before the recapitulation, to ruminate over, and later attempt to integrate, both a minuet and a slow movement. The Suk Quartet is occasionally careless about intonation, and the recording is a touch too reverberant, but there are no current rivals. Good booklet notes. Keith Potter
