Handel, Mozart, Strauss

This is effectively two recitals tacked together: the Handel and Mozart items date from 1967, and are of their period, with steely strings and a great clunking harpsichord. The Strauss songs are from 1985, and benefit from the measured, full-toned accompaniments by Wolfgang Sawallisch. Vocally, stylistically and interpretatively, Strauss proves the most congenial territory for Popp, though her singing is invariably clean and skilful even if there’s a hint of monotony of vocal colour and the occasional pinched sound higher up. The booklet contains neither articles nor texts. George Hall
