Beethoven, Bach, Paganini, Prokofiev, Vieuxtemps, Haydn, Suk & Kreisler

There are some marvellous moments of flamboyance in Isaac Stern’s 1953 recital at the Salle Gaveau in Paris with his faithful duo partner Alexander Zakin. Two items, Paganini’s La campanella and Suk’s Burlesque, bring the house down, so exuberant is the playing. Somewhat surprisingly the programme concludes with a violin concerto, in this case Vieuxtemps’s Fourth, performed with piano accompaniment.

But there is also plenty of musical weight, not least in a moving performance of Prokofiev’s F minor Violin Sonata that is slightly flawed by the curious omission of a few bars of the second subject in the finale.
