Naxos’s recital of recordings by MAGGIE TEYTE provides a cross-section of her 1940-47 EMI recordings, featuring the French repertoire in which she was famous.

Teyte’s singing at its best creates a paradoxical combination of assurance and fragility, and her authority is palpable despite occasionally frayed tone. Someday a comprehensive edition of Teyte’s commercial recordings, so far haphazardly available on CD, should be assembled; even then, Naxos’s disc would be of interest for its inclusion of three 1947 Standard Hour broadcast performances led by Pierre Monteux (Thomas’s ‘Connais-tu le pays’, Duparc’s ‘L’invitation au voyage’, and ‘Voi che sapete’).
