WORKS: Polonaises, Op. 26, 40, 44 & 53; Polonaise-Fantasie
PERFORMER: Idil Biret (piano)
CATALOGUE NO: 8.550360 DDD
The long established Turkish pianist Idil Biret had the distinction of studying with the legendary Chopin interpreter, Alfred Cortot. Oh for a bit of Cortot’s inspired spontaneity in this recording! Not that the playing is insensitive, merely that Biret, labouring with good intentions, makes heavy weather of these proud and imperious pieces.
The increasing tendency among record companies to go in for complete surveys of a particular genre (presumably Vol. 2 will take care of Chopin’s remaining Polonaises) is fine for the shops, which like to know where to put things on the shelves, but how many Polonaise addicts do you know? Adrian Jack
