Chopin: Ballade in F, Op. 38; Ballade in F minor, Op. 52; Scherzo in B minor, Op. 20; Scherzo in E, Op. 54; Nocturne in B, Op, 62/1; Nocturne in E flat, Op. 9/2; Polonaise in C sharp minor, Op. 26/1; Polonaise B flat minor, Op. posth.

Angela Lear has made a close study of Chopin’s intentions and works, as much as possible, from the manuscripts. She launches her well planned programme with a flowing F minor Ballade. In the E flat Nocturne she incorporates the variants and ‘replacement’ cadenza Chopin wrote down for his pupils Lenz and Gutmann, and she gives a welcome airing to the posthumous Polonaise in B flat minor, with its mini-variation on Rossini. A splendid first release from the enterprising new Essex-based Libra Records. Wadham Sutton
