Handel, Arne, JC Bach, Chilcot, Mozart

Mad he may have been, but George III had a good ear for harpsichords. This 1740 Tschudi, which he kept at Kew Palace, has a beautifully soft tone, precise yet singing, and Martin Souter plays it with characteristic finesse. His engaging programme of likely court favourites includes a graceful Handel suite, a sprightly JC Bach sonata and some early Mozart minuets. The real gems, though, are two exquisitely fashioned sonatas by Thomas Arne. Outstanding. Graham Lock
