Hindemith: Viola Sonatas, Opp. 11/5, 25/1, 31/4; Viola Sonata (1937)

These four solo pieces from the inter-war years amply demonstrate Hindemith’s mastery of the viola, sustaining the solo line with the utmost imagination. Of course, the natural richness and lyricism of the instrument are generally to the fore, and there is also no lack of vitality, though at times the rugged rhythms can tire the ear. Cortese demonstrates a formidable technique and dedicated concentration, while the recording is admirable, both clear and beautifully balanced. Terry Barfoot
