The New Shoes

Nuala Kennedy’s Scotland-centred album The New Shoes is dominated by her virtuoso flute-playing and occasional vocals which weave through dance sequences and songs against some teasingly extended harmonies.

The title track flings seven and eight-beat phrases against each other with unpredictable abandon – try dancing to that and the name becomes self-explanatory.

An extra final number, hinted at but not listed on the cover, strikes up a radically contrapuntal flute duet, ending as an explicit two-part invention.
