Prokofiev: Piano Sonata No. 2; Piano Sonata No. 7; Piano Sonata No. 8

Ovchinikov’s EMI Prokofiev piano sonata set (Nov 1993 reviews) was a hard act to follow, but while young German Bernd Glemser may miss a little of the other’s more subtle disquiet and cumulative terror in Nos 7 and 8, his firmly-rooted brilliance and apparently invincible dexterity are in the same league. A flawless performance of the unremittingly inventive Second Sonata breaks up what should be two consecutive chapters of one harrowing story, but if you want a bargain-price introduction to Prokofiev’s later masterpieces, this is an exciting place to start.
