Sibelius: Complete Piano Music, Vol. 5

If proof were needed, this host of primarily short piano pieces gives ample evidence of Sibelius’s genius as a miniaturist. From the breezy, almost Grieg-like ‘Six Pieces’, Op. 92, to the visionary ‘Five Esquisses’, everything on these last two volumes of the complete piano music are well worth hearing, especially the fascinating piano version of Finlandia which completes the second disc. Annette Servadei is a persuasive guide in this repertoire – sensitive to scale and never unnecessarily flashy. Jan Smaczny
