Smetana: Piano Music

This is the sixth in Unicorn-Kanchana’s fascinating Czech Piano Music series, and undoubtedly one of the best. The plum is Smetana’s Macbeth and the Witches – a flight of fancy that goes beyond even Liszt in harmonic extravagance. The sheer audacity of Macbeth is balanced by delightful salon pieces and polkas with an almost Chopinesque expressive range. Kvapil performs with insightful virtuosity, and the piano sound is one of the most natural I have heard. Jan Smaczny
