Weyse played a key role in the development of Danish art song. These 1799 sonatas (the Eighth is later and published in 1818) are very much in the tradition of Clementi and CPE Bach; they are slight with a limited range of pianistic devices, but possess an appealing lyrical grace. Robert Layton
