Live at Shanghai Jazz

The solo guitar is an institution in jazz, as is the piano trio, and it’s tempting to carry the comparison further by also describing pianist MARIAN MCPARTLAND as an institution herself.

A sprightly 84 years old when her trio’s Live at Shanghai Jazz was recorded last year, her distinctively laconic, witty and understated style is as rewarding as ever.

The album mixes standards, originals and some more scholarly items (the set opens with Mary Lou Williams’s ‘Scratchin’ in the Gravel’).
