This is Evans’s first ‘live’ date since the Village Vanguard sessions of June 1961, and is a worthy successor to that historic date. Full of inner musical detail – the pianist’s reharmonisation of the middle eight in ‘Lover Man’, or his new composition ‘Time Remembered’, with its scrupulous avoidance of the dominant seventh – the relaxed group interplay make this a gem.
