Sounding not unlike the sparky but elegant composed music Wynton Marsalis produces for his mid-sized bands, Soundtrack comprises seven vigorous, subtle Barker originals (one a film noir-inspired suite, 'Sounds in Black and White", featuring the septet's instruments each playing a different 'character') and a characteristically imaginative Colin Towns arrangement of 'Nature Boy'. The result is the most accomplished demonstration to date of Barker's formidable compositional, bandleading and trumpeting skills. CP
