This disc reveals more and more depth on repeated playing, always repaying close attention. I won’t be surprised if, by the time this review appears, I regret not awarding it five stars.
Waldmann’s compositions are immediately engaging and hummable (or whistable, according to your penchant). His playing, even on fast numbers, is thoughtful and reflective, but not too cerebral or careful. His tone on tenor is especially pleasing.
Neame and Høiby are part of the splendid Phronesis. Sott is accumulating experiecne with a wide range of bands. Each makes contributions that are well worth focusing on, regardless of who is soloing at any point. Høiby’s strong, supple lines and Neame’s adept synthesis of melodic and harmonic elements go far beyond traditional ‘comping’ (jazz accompaniment), locking together with their colleagues’ playing in a manner that bespeaks careful planning yet still sounds organic and spontaneous. Martensson’s singing on two tracks is a charming bonus. Barry Witherden
