Josquin’s Missa Hercules Dux Ferrariae was composed in honour of Duke Ercole I of Ferrara, so the vocal group A Sei Voci, together with the choir Maîtrise Notre Dame de Paris and the Renaissance wind ensembles Les Saqueboutiers de Toulouse and Ensemble Labyrinthes, present the work in what might be called a free but circumstantially apt realisation. Under Bernard Fabre-Garrus’s evidently devoted direction one soon becomes accustomed to the rich variety of treatments to which Josquin’s polyphony, based around a cantus firmus derived from its title, is subjected. The intense flavour is maintained also in the motets (one by Johannes Martini), while the disc’s crowning glory is a ravishing a cappella realisation of Josquin’s masterly Miserere mei, Deus – a luscious stream of polyphony that is ingeniously unified.
