Lully, Marais, Sainte-Colombe & Couperin

It is 11 years since director Alain Corneau’s Tous les matins du monde was first released. Set in the grand siècle, the film is partly about the great French bass viol player Marin Marais, but much more concerns Marais’s teacher M de Sainte-Colombe and his two viol-playing daughters. The varied soundtrack includes pieces by Lully, Sainte-Colombe, Couperin and, of course, Marais himself, and it is some of these which feature in this reissue by Jordi Savall and his Ensemble, Le Concert des Nations.

They provide the bass viol with a colourful shop window to display its versatility and subtle colouring; but it is Couperinsublime third Leçon de Ténèbres, sung by Montserrat Figueras and Maria Cristina Kiehr which steals the show. The release also contains a separate disc of similar repertoire, but recorded last year and titled Dix ans après. Nicholas Anderson
