Abraham Ellstein

Yet perhaps the most consistently enjoyable disc of all is that featuring Songs of the yiddish stage. Although there is nothing especially original about the idiom of composers such as Abraham Ellstein who integrates a few Eastern European elements with gestures familiar from Viennese operetta and American popular music, the songs have a refreshing charm and honesty, and they are performed here with a spontaneity and enthusiasm that is totally affecting.
