Ferrier’s last studio
recordings, made a
year before her death.
In 1960 the LPO
re-recorded the accompaniments
in stereo, with pretty plausible
results. The funereal tempos, soggy
orchestral sostenuto playing and
touched-up scoring belong to a
distant, unlamented age. But Ferrier’s
singing – intensely compassionate
– has a timeless beauty and nobility.
