Beethoven Schumann Bach

Myra Hess was a great pianist, but this disc does not show her at her best, partly because in the two concertos she receives mediocre support. And in Beethoven's Second Piano Concerto there are quite a few slips, though her interpretaion and chracteristic warmth of tone, are as distinguished as ever. In Schumann's Piano Concerto, one of her very special favourites, she gets wooden accompaniment from Sargent, but triumphs over adversity- but there are other recordings where she doesn't have to. A Bach Toccata brings this slightly sad disc to a properly upbeat close.
