Elgar Arnold Tchaikovsky Debussy

Constantin Silvestri remains a slightly fringe figure in the conductors' pantheon, but this new double disc, disgracefully packaged, of items from concerts with 'his' Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra may do something to remedy that. He didn't excel in the Austro-German symphonic repertoire, but fortunately that is not present in this set. What we do get is wonderfully invigorating Elgar: the Cockaigne Overture, followed by a spacious and Noble Account of the First Symphony.

Other English music here includes Arnold's Beckus the Dandipratt overture, and a thrilling Four Sea Interludes by Peter Grimes. Debussy's Jeux gets a thoroughly idiomatic performance, and more straightforward fare begins and ends this second disc: Tchaikovsky's Second Symphony, and Enescu's Romanian Rhapsody No. 1 - the only piece from Silvestri's native land on these discs. Both the orchestra and the conducting impress throughout this set.
