Less than a year on from their debut

disc, the fresh-faced Irish-American

siblings and their canny management

haven’t changed their admirable tune.

Brushing aside the few mildly cheesy

moments first – Jeffrey Shumway’s

five-piano interlacing of familiar

spirituals according to Copland

and Dvo?ák, an arrangement of a

Rachmaninov romance which starts

off promising the big tune from the

Second Concerto, and some rather

abrupt leaps between numbers from

Stravinsky’s Firebird – the rest is in no

way violated or disembowelled. Alas,

the ‘unbelievable energy’ promised

by the liner-note’s breathless prose

is hardly to be found in a cautious

collective Rhapsody in Blue, and

the two-piano finale from Ravel’s

Rapsodie Espagnole never suggests

Spanish festival frenzy.

Among the solo turns, lead talent

Gregory Brown whips up the most

excitement in John Novacek’s Full

Stride Ahead and turns in some

elegant Magyar inflections in

Liszt’s Sixth Hungarian Rhapsody.

Brother Ryan also shines in

Ginastera’s Danzas argentinas, Op. 2.

Newcomers charmed by the Brown

phenomenon will find much to

keep them on their toes here, but no

information other than dates about

the rarities, or indeed anything else,

on the disc. David Nice
